Editors Wanted: hitotoki.org/your_city/

Hitotoki Worldwide

We'd love to open Hitotoki editions in cities around the world, but there's just no way three of us (the founders of this site) could possibly juggle editorial duties on our own. So this is where we call out for help, on our knees, arms raised high — dedicated, motivated, positive, affable lovers of literature with editorial chops, we call to you!

Editing for a city takes time and commitment. Sure, it's not a full time job, but it ain't dishwashing, and it certainly requires a steady consistency of focus to make for an active and successful city.

If you're interested in becoming an editor for hitotoki.org/your_city/, we ask for the following:

  • Read the guidelines below carefully, and make sure you're willing to take on the duties as listed.
  • If you're OK with the editorial duties as outlined below, send us an email at mewritegood@hitotoki with the following points:
    • Tell us about yourself, how your found hitotoki.org and why you're drawn to the project.
    • Convince us that opening a hitotoki.org/your_city/ is a great thing!
    • Are you connected with the literary world in your city? Have you been an editor before? (Don't worry if you haven't, these aren't necessarily strict prerequisites.) Brag to us a bit about why you'll make such a great editor.

After receiving your mail, if we think hitotoki.org/your_city/ is a good idea, we'll build a hitotoki.org/your_city/ holding page with the following:

  • Email signup
  • Submissions form download
  • RSS subscription
  • Witty holding page graphic

We'll coordinate a launch date and you can begin to pull for submissions. We require ten usable, edited submissions before we push a city live.

Hitotoki.org Editorial agreement

Editor = You, Admin = Paul, Craig, & Chris

We tried to be exhaustive in this list to make it as easy and clear as possible for someone who wants to bring Hitotoki to their city to do so. The goal of the following points is to allow Hitotoki to spread while maintaining a site-wide level of consistency and quality.

By becoming a Hitotoki editor for your city you are agreeing to the following:

Launch

  • Editor will modify the standard Hitotoki Submission Form as seen appropriate for their city.
  • Editor will secure at least ten stories by launch day.
  • Editor will promote the launch of the city by seeking out online/offline magazines, blogs, etc. that will write about the event.
  • Editor will learn how to use the simple data input system and input all stories for launch.

Communication with Authors

  • Editor will respond to all submissions within two days of receipt, regardless of quality.
  • Unpublishable
    • Editor will kindly reject submission, explaining honestly why the submission was rejected, and encouraging the writer to resubmit and thanking them.
  • Needs work
    • Editor will aggressively work with writer to refine story until it reaches Hitotoki standards.
    • Editor will continue communication with writers, letting no more than two days pass between correspondence.
    • Editor will email a final version of story to author before publication if the story has been edited beyond grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    • Editor will email writer again when story is published.
  • Perfect-out-of-box
    • Editor will email writer when story is published.

Communication with Us

  • Editor will notify us of if any conflicts arise with authors.
  • Editor will use some online tool (Basecamp, Google Docs, etc.) to keep track of author interactions and story status.

Images

  • Editor will notify Admin as soon as they know of a publishable story without an image from the writer, including desired date of story release.
  • Admin will deliver an image at least two days before publication date.
  • Editor is encouraged to recruit local illustrators or photographers to contribute to Hitotoki.

Maintenance

  • Editor will continuously promote hitotoki.org/their_city/ on the internet, and offline through networking, and if money allows, events (Hitotoki related readings, parties, i.e., Hitotoki Hitoban Tokyo).
  • Editor will upload at least one new story a month.
  • Cities must receive at least 800 Unique Page Views per month (about 25 people a day as reported by Google Analytics).

Quality standards

  • Editor will ensure that all stories follow proper grammar, punctuation and spelling in their language, except for purposes of creative expression.
  • Editor will ensure that all stories meet the minimum requirements for a Hitotoki:
    • Under 500 words
    • Centered on a specific time and location as experienced by the author
    • Story has not been previously published elsewhere.

Footnoting

  • Editor will strive to include at least two interesting footnotes with every Hitotoki submission.

System Maintenance

  • Admin will respond to all technical support questions within 2 days.
  • Admin will notify Editors 7 days before any major upgrade or redesign.

Credit and Intellectual Property

  • Editor will receive short bio, small photo (optional) and link to one site of choice on About section of Hitotoki
  • Admin retains all rights to design, concept and technical know-how of Hitotoki.
  • Writers retain all rights to their stories and will receive a short bio and link to site of choice.
  • Photographers and illustrators retain all rights to their work and will receive a text credit and link to site of choice.

Compensation

  • Since Hitotoki does not currently generate revenue, Editors work on a volunteer basis for no compensation. If Hitotoki does one day generate revenue, fair compensation may be renegotiated at the discretion of Admin.
  • Editors are personally responsible for any expenses incurred while working on Hitotoki.

Termination

  • In the unfortunate case of an unresolvable conflict between Editorial and Admin, or in the case of Editorial not meeting the above standards for content and updating, Admin reserves the right to replace said Editor or close Hitotoki in that city. (Even though we (The Admin) are reasonable people -- not one of us has even ever been in a fist-fight for the love of God -- we have to say this just in case we accidentally green-light a Crazy Joe as editor. Or if an Editor suddenly leaves for a 2 1/2 year trip around the world, traveling mainly through the Nepal, Tibet, Myanmar (Burma), rural China, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and perhaps Mongolia (camping in the Gobi for several months), without telling us.)
